Just months after the world debut of the 2009 Mini Cooper Convertible, we've learned of an even hotter version: the 2009 Mini John Cooper Works Convertible.
Making its official debut at the 2009 Geneva motor show, the JCW ragtop features a number of upgrades over a "base" Mini Cooper S Convertible. The 1.6-liter engine has been tuned to produce 211 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque, versus 172 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque for the Cooper S. The added power lowers the 0-62 mph time (by 0.1 seconds) to approximately 6.9 seconds.
Straight-line acceleration may not be significantly increased in the JCW Convertible, but the car may be more fun around switchbacks, thanks to a retuned "sport" suspension. Like the Cooper S, the JCW Convertible features a `Sport' button that sharpens steering, throttle response, and activates a bespoke engine control map to produce boost earlier, yield 206 lb-ft of torque.
In addition to retuning the suspension, the JCW Convertible features a unique electronic differential lock control (EDLC) that helps the car maintain superior grip around corners. EDLC works with dynamic stability control (DSC) fully deactivated and electronically slows the spinning inside wheel to make sure power is transferred to the wheel with greatest traction. Upgraded Brembo brakes with bright red calipers help the car stop faster.
The JCW Convertible also adds unique 17-inch alloy wheels, "John Cooper Works" badges, and a full aero kit. The interior is top-of-the-line, and includes an alcantara steering wheel, sport seats, JCW floor mats, and a glossy piano black dashboard finish.
No word has been given on exact U.S. pricing, but as the John Cooper Works hardtop commands a $7000 premium over the Cooper S, we'd expect a similar gap in pricing for the convertible.
